Brian Gleeson Property are delighted to bring to market this 3 bedroom detached home steeped in character and history. With period features and charm in abundance this property is sure to please. This delightful home is tucked away at the entrance to the scenic Dromana Drive on the edge of the quaint and beautiful village of Villierstown; which is located on the banks of the River Blackwater (perfect for all manner of water sports).
This 200 year old Gate Lodge, was built for staff who looked after the gates to Dromana estate, opening and closing them each morning and evening.
This home has been restored, retaining, where possible, and otherwise recreating the many beautiful features of a classic gate lodge. The major refurbishment of the original part of the property and the addition of a sitting room, dining room and bathroom took almost a year. The Lodge was transformed into a beautiful, cosy and comfortable family home. Inside the décor is very much in keeping with the Lodge’s character, decorated simply and elegantly, with a real rustic feel.
Situated at the entrance to the village, it is close to all village amenities and in close proximity to the towns of Cappoquin and the lovely Lismore. The Lodge’s gardens have been lovingly recreated to afford privacy for its occupants while maintaining visual access to the village and the surrounding fields and woodland that lies behind the property. The approach to the house from the Dromana Drive is through a canopy of beautiful mature trees.
The Blackwater river, considered one of Ireland’s finest fishing rivers, runs through the heart of the village and is a centre of many water pursuits. The present owner keeps a boat on the river and regularly fishes its bountiful waters for salmon and trout. The area is also a haven for sportsmen who enjoy the superb duck and pheasant hunting season here.
The area is steeped in history. Villierstown is a planned village dating from 1756, built to house workers in the linen industry. It was constructed by the Villiers family of nearby Dromana House.
During the famine years of 1845 to 1849, the linen industry in Villierstown died out and some locals turned to fishing on the Blackwater as a source of income. Many villagers were retained by the Villiers-Stuarts to work on their estate at Dromana.
During the 1820s the Dromana estate encompassed 40,000 acres (160 km2). Part of this land today makes up Dromana Wood which is managed by Coillte on a long term lease.
In the centre of Villierstown is the decommissioned Church of Ireland Church which dates back to 1748. The former church was completely refurbished in recent years and now serves as a community hall for cultural and other events.
A number of houses in this picturesque village date back to the mid 18th century. The gate piers directly outside the Lodge were erected in 1875.
The Lodge represents that rare thing, a character property tastefully and sympathetically restored, full of charm and appeal that offers all the comforts expected in a modern day home. Ideal as a family home, a rural idyll to escape to, or the perfect holiday retreat.
Villierstown is only 14km to the Heritage town of Lismore and 17km to the coastal town of Dungarvan, home to the highly acclaimed Waterford Greenway. The historic town of Youghal in County Cork is only 23kms away.
